So I want to know your opinions on this. Tell me if I have an "attitude." Remember how we had a mutant ant problem? I told the manager about it when we moved in and she didn't seem to want to deal with it. I called again a couple of weeks later to say that we wanted it taken care of. I left a message. About a week later, I got a message from her saying that her phone hadn't been working. She was sorry that it had taken so long to get back to me, and I could stop by any time during office hours and they would come by to spray the ants. A couple days later when we had some time, we went to the office during office hours and asked them to come spray.
The girl working at the time didn't know anything about the situation, so we said we'd come by later. The next day, not too long after I had gotten up and still wasn't dressed (keep in mind I usually get up late since I work late at night), I heard a soft knock on the door. I wasn't in any position to answer the door so I ignored it. Another knock. I went to see who it was, and by the time I got there, the person was gone. Mission accomplished.
About 30 minutes later, (I still wasn't dressed... hehe) I was changing Brooklyn's diaper and I heard another soft knock at the door. Again, I had a very good excuse to not be able to answer. After another knock I went to see who it was and SOMEBODY STARTED COMING INTO MY HOUSE!!! Seriously! Whoever it was unlocked BOTH locks and was just about to open the door. I was so freaked out! I had the newly-changed baby in my arms and rushed to put my foot in front of the door before whoever it was could get in. I turned the deadbolt back into place just in time. The conversation between us went as follows:
Me: (frantically) Who is it?!
Strange man I do NOT know: Maintenance.
Me: Please do not enter my house without my permission! (I did say please.)
Stranger: You put in a work order for ants?
Me: Yeah, please call me next time, now is not a good time.
Stranger: Okay.
And then he left. I was so APPALLED!!! I felt so VIOLATED!! I burst into tears after he left. I know that sounds dramatic, but I am not used to people feeling like they can come into my home whenever they want to. What if I was in the shower? Going to the bathroom? Taking a nap? There are a NUMBER of reasons why I might not have answered the door but still been home. And of these reasons, so many of them would have made me feel even more violated had a stranger come into my home at that time. What made it worse is that I have explained to management before that I work late and wake up late and have requested that they call before they come by.
I was so upset after this experience, and part of it was because I didn't want management to think of me as "that girl." You know, the difficult tenant. The one that apparently doesn't think it's appropriate for you to go into her house if she chooses not to (or cannot) open the door. Sure enough, when Jason went to tell them that we were ready for them to spray the following day, the manager said that the maintenance guy had mentioned that I "had an attitude." An attitude?! Are you SERIOUS?! I was in shock!! Had I been in the shower and come out to find a strange man in my house, I think I would have maced him. Isn't that understandable?
The manager told us that if they have a work order in they can come in to get it done whenever they like. I looked it up and didn't find any legal evidence to the contrary. Doesn't it seem like they should at least give you some notice? If there had been a note on my door saying that they were coming by at noon the next day, and then I didn't answer the door at that time, I would certainly be okay with it if they came in anyway. I would have been expecting it. As it was, I didn't know we had a "work order" in! We didn't fill anything out. Does the fact that the complex has a mutant ant problem and we mention that we don't like cohabitating with steroid-using insects entitle them to invade our privacy in such a manner? Obviously, you all know my opinion on the matter. Am I wrong? If so, can you explain the other side to me so I can be a little more understanding perhaps? Thank you.

Melody, I'm so sorry that happened to you. No one wants to feel invaded. A good apartment should give a time period when they have maintenance to do. Maybe you can talk to that ladies boss or even the owner. Or move to Wymount....they do a good job of notifying you when maintenance is to be done. :) Good luck!
That is totally illegal! No one is allowed to enter your apartment unless they have spoken to you before they are about to enter. Even if you have a work order in, they still have to notify you of when they are coming. The only time they are allowed to use "their" keys without permission is if there is an emergency! Trust me I know, we took our last rental company to court! Something totally different..but I know everything about tenant rights! How rude of them!
This happened to us all the time when we lived in an apartment in Tallahassee. If your complex is large, with lots of units, it is hard for them to pay attention to individual schedules. Plus, what if you had just gone grocery shopping or whatever? They wouldn't know. Lack of privacy is the number-one thing I DON'T MISS about living in an apartment! The worst was sitting at my kitchen table in my pajamas (or nursing a baby!) and seeing the maintenance guy suddenly walk by. I also had the bug guy come in the apartment while I was showering. Not fun. I think it's just part of apartment life, though. Certainly not worth starting a legal ruckus over. Do you have a chain for your door? That might be a good investment. That way no one can get in unless you let them. Good luck with the ants!
I don't know about the law in Utah, but here in Oregon we have to put a 24-hour notice of entry before entering any unit (unless the place is on fire or flodding or some such emergency). The only time I would ever open a unit here for a maintenance guy or give him a key is if I had it in writing from the tenant that it was okay to enter on that date and at a certain time. In my opinion, it is not right for them to let anyone ever enter your apartment unless you know about it. I wouldn't be happy if I was you either. Lashelle
