Moving Out

At the end of August, right after Jason's finals, we had to move out of our apartment complex. Our contract was up and we could not move back to Lehi because Grandma decided to stay there longer than she had originally planned. So, we moved to the only place that we could find with reasonable rent that did not require a long contract. We now live in Wymount which is BYU family housing. I have been putting off the blog about our move because I don't have a lot of positive things to say. In fact, I believe I have been successful at repressing a lot of the bad memories because it now doesn't seem as horrible to me as it was at the time. I guess it's better to think of it as a learning experience. Here are a few of the things I learned:
  • When U-Haul says a truck will cost you $19.95, be prepared to pay closer to $50. This is especially true if the person who used the truck before you didn't fill up the tank all the way.
  • No matter how much cheaper it might be, packing your stuff in bags is not nearly as convenient as boxes.
  • Liquid soap spills, even if it has never been opened before.
  • Make sure the place you are moving to has air conditioning; it is not always a given.
  • Double check that your furniture will be delivered on time, or you will end up staying at Grandma's house for the weekend to avoid sleeping, sitting, and eating on the floor.
  • BYU internet is not compatible with JetBlue equipment. Factor in some forced time off and a few trips to SLC before you will be able to work, with a very slow connection, from home.
  • Do not live on the second floor, with a small child, when there is no elevator.
  • Ask somebody to either watch your baby or help you move. It's too difficult to take care of a child, move, and clean at the same time.
  • Make sure you have time to put your things away before you need to pack for a vacation. Otherwise, you will make a very big mess trying to find your stuff and that is what you will come home to.
  • If you have a tight schedule, don't plan on getting your mail for 2 weeks. Wymount requires an orientation meeting before they will give you your mail key.
  • Don't trust the random guys in the church lobby when they tell you your ward doesn't meet in that building.
  • Very thin walls lead to an extreme lack of privacy from your neighbors.
  • Storage space is very important. When there is not enough, you will end up keeping your underwear in a diaper box.
  • Don't lose your deposit refund check. It costs about $50 to replace it.
  • BYU cable stinks.
  • Not having a dishwasher stinks even more.
  • Living uphill from your laundrymat stinks even more than that.

And on the plus side:

  • Vonage is super cool. Even if there is nowhere to plug it in, you can have all of your calls forwarded to you.
  • There is a very nice guy in California whose cell phone number is just one digit off from mine. He doesn't mind if you accidentally call him about 6 times in the middle of the night.
  • BYU is very good at maintaining their apartments, even though they are old.
  • People who live in Wymount are very kind and welcoming.
  • Wymount and BYU 140th ward have lots of cool parties.
  • If you live on the top of a hill, you will have a great view out your window.
  • September is the perfect time to move to an apartment with no air conditioning. Box fans in the windows work great.

Okay, so I hope that post wasn't a total downer. At least we have a decent place to live at a decent price! With great people!

Melody - I understand the frustrations of moving, especially when extra costs are involved. Good luck with your new surroundings. I believe we were in the 140th ward too at BYU. What building are you in? We were in 10C. Another plus is daily walks to the Provo Temple. Oh, and don't let Brooklyn loose your apt. key. They cost $25 to replace. Also, I've heard of Vonage. Is it a good thing to have? I don't know much about it. Enjoy the grass visits with all of the ladies there. I miss that!

What a pain! You guys have had to move a lot lately too, so I can imagine how frustrating that would be. Moving is bad enough, but I'm sure it's 10x worse with a baby.
